The same weekend I had issues with ice in Rock Springs, we also had issues with ice at our Pilot Hill transmitter site in Laramie. I certainly had never encountered ice this severe, and apparently neither had our General Manager.
Our main transmitter had folded back to approximately 18%. The other transmitters were all folding back as well.
Check out the white outline of ice caked towers against the blue sky…
Closer to the tower…
Note the very thick layer of ice on the trees as well as the tower and guy wires.
KUWR’s tower was not the only one affected…
This tower is shared by a commercial FM station in town and various other users.
Look at the ice on our tower and antenna bays!
No wonder the transmitter had folded back to 18%!
Wow…The ice is 3-4″ thick on the tower members.
Even our aux antenna much lower on the tower with radomes was affected…
All of the trees and power lines are also coated in ice…
Damage to the electrical meter caused by falling ice…
Damage to light fixtures inside the building…
Ice had fallen on the roof and caused the fluorescent tubes to fall out.
