We have been installing a monitoring box at our transmitter sites called the “GoldenEagle HD”. This is an excellent unit that gives us a great deal of information about how the analog and HD signals are performing. It is capable of monitoring not only our own signal but the signals of other stations in the area as well.

Unfortunately we had some early growing pains with these units…The demo unit I worked with was flawless. The units that arrived after I placed my order were locking up at random. Apparently they had switched to a new motherboard which had an issue with the USB controller. I was able to help them track down and isolate the issue. In spite of the issue, their support has been stellar throughout the process.

The manufacturer was able to come up with a ‘patch’ which reboots the units when they lock up, however, the permanent fix involves a new motherboard and software. They are sending a technician with new motherboards for our units but I needed to remove them from the field to perform the upgrades.

This weekend I visited Gillette and Casper to remove the units from service. I should have the units upgraded and back in service by the end of the month.
