Reid and I headed for Rawlins today to work on a satellite dish. We seem to be doing a lot of work with dishes in some form or another lately! A few weeks ago, Larry and Reid had installed a dish at our Rawlins translator site to replace an unreliable over-the-air pickup from Laramie. This […]

Today I completed the final step of installing a new backup generator at the Pilot Hill transmitter site for KUWR. Over the past few weeks I had electricians install the unit and plumbers route the fuel line to it. The last remaining step was a startup by a dealer for warranty purposes. The previous generator […]

A month or so ago I ordered a new uplink dish and amplifier for WPR. Our existing uplink dish and amplifier are well past their useful life. They will serve as an OK backup system but eventually the amplifier will die and the dish will deteriorate beyond usability. In addition, parts for the existing uplink […]

I spent pretty much the entire day today bringing WPR’s Rock Springs transmitter back to life. This transmitter had been off the air since late February. Normally the station runs at 30,000 watts with 12,000 watts of transmitter power output into a 5 bay antenna. The station had been running at 1,250 watts with a […]

This past weekend I decided to finish installing some Uninterruptible Power Supply units at my transmitter site. During the course of this installation I looked up at the incoming power feed to the building and discovered some extremely serious deterioration of the wiring. The copper was exposed, discolored and corroded for about 6″ where the […]

Nothing like trying something new for the first time… We had ordered several satellite dishes for various purposes. My assistant had decided that he wanted to tackle putting one of them together and aiming it. He had never assembled one of these dishes or aimed one before so I told him to go for it. […]

Some time between Saturday night and Sunday afternoon we suffered a failure of our remote control for KUWR. KUWR is the flagship station for Wyoming Public Radio and is located here in Laramie, Wyoming. Most of our transmitters use a dialup phone line for remote control. KUWR uses a radio data link between the studios […]

Of course after one problem is fixed several more spring up… Our station in Pinedale did not come back up after this afternoon’s service outage and the remote control would not answer the telephone line. After confirming with a local engineer that it was indeed off the air, I sent him to the site. He […]

My assistant and I moved the power supply for our satellite uplink amplifier down to the uplink rack in engineering this afternoon. It is now on emergency power. Fortunately, we found a spare cable run between engineering and the uplink dish. This cable run was able to handle the output from the power supply without […]

The satellite uplink went down AGAIN at about 3 PM this afternoon during another major thunderstorm. The problem? A tripped ground fault current interrupt on the outlet that the power supply for the amplifier was plugged into. Once I reset the GFCI I verified that our satellite carrier was back up and sent commands to […]
